According to the book Vermont in the Civil War by Benedict, on page 174 it states that
First Lieutenant Andrew J. Sargent was severely wounded in the hip at the Battle for
Cedar Creek.

Wounded at Port Hudson, LA on May 27, 1863 (Vermont in the Civil War by Benedict,
page 133)

Page 167, Vermont in the Civil War by Benedict states that Lieutenant Sargent joined the
list of heroes who shed their blood around the flags during the Battle for Cedar Creek.

Listed as being age 17 on 1870 census, but not listed on 1860 census. May be niece of Andrew rather than daughter.


Linus Edmunds

Linus Edmunds was born in Danby, VT on September 24, 1810 and died in Chittenden, VT on February 20, 1877. He was educated in the public schools of his native town and settled on the homestead, where he followed farming. He was a frugal, industrious, and worthy citizen, holding from time to time offices of trust and honor in the town of his birth. He was a Selectman in 1848. In 1858 he removed to Chittenden and in 1867 he represented that town in the State Legislature. "He was a man of quiet habits and commanded the respect and confidence of the community."

In the name of God Amen. the 24 day of March 1671\72 I William Sarent of ye town of Emefbury in ye County of Norfolk Maffachufettf in Newengland Seaman being in pritty good health of body & of found & pfect memorie (praise bee given to god for ye same) & knowing ye uncertainty of thif life on earth & being Defirouf to fettle thingf in order doe make thif my laft will & teftamt in manner & form That if to fayFirst & principally I comend my soule to Allmighty God my Creator affurdely believing yt shall recieve full pardon & free remiffion of all my fins & bee faved by ye peciouf death & meritte of my bleffed Savioc & Redemmer Chrift Jefuf & my body to ye earth from whence it waf taken to bee buried in fuch Decent & Chriftian manner af to my Executoed hereafter named fhall be thought meete & convenient.

And af touching fuch wordly eftate af ye lord mercy hath lent mee my will & meaning if ye fame fhal be imployed & beftowed af hereafter by thif will & Teftament Item I give & bequeath to my grand child William Challis five poundf & to my grandchildren Elizabeth, Lydia, Mary, & Phillip Watson Challif to each of them twenty fhillings. Item I give & bequeath unto my grand children Dorothie & Elizabeth Colby to each of them twenty fhillings. Item I give unto my grand child William Sargent thirty shillings. Item I give & bequeath unto my daughter Elizabeth ye wife of Sam Colby five poundF. Item I give all ye remayndere of my estate (these my lagacies & my funeral chargef being firfte paid) unto my daughter Sarah both howfind & landf, chattelf, & other movables wt foever alwayf pvided that if fhe die wth out children that this howfing & landf to bee equally divided unto my four children hereafter named, i.e., my fons Thomaf & William & my daughters Mary & Elizabeth. Item I to conftitute ordaine & appointe my fone Thomaf Sargent & my daughter Sarah Sargent Executors unto thif my will & Teftamt & doe make my loving brother in law Tho Bradbury & my efteemed friend Major Pike my loverfeerf to take care that thif my will may bee prformed according to ye true intente & meaning thereof.

Below is the Last Will & Testament of Willliam Sargent translated (the best I could do) to make it more understandable.

In the name of God, Amen. The 24th day of March 1671/72, I, William Sargent of the town of Amesbury in the County of Norfolk Massachusetts in New England, a Seaman, being in pretty good health of body and found perfect in memory (praise be given to God for the same) and knowing the uncertainty of this life on earth and being desirous to settle things in order, do make this my last will and testament in manner and form; that is to say first and principally I commend my soul to Almighty God my Creator assuredly believing it shall receive full pardon and free remission of all my sins and be saved by the precious death and merit of my blessed Savior and Redeemer Christ Jesus and my body to the earth from whence it was taken to be buried in such Decent and Christian manner as to my Executed hereafter named shall be thought meet and convenient.

And as touching such worldly estate as the lord mercy has lent me, my will and meaning is the same shall be employed and bestowed as hereafter by this Will & Testament. Item I give and bequeath to my grandchild, William Challis five pounds and to my grandchildren Elizabeth, Lydia, Mary, and Phillip Watson Challis to each of them twenty shillings. Item I give and bequeath unto my grandchildren Dorothie and Elizabeth Colby to each of them twenty shillings. Item I give unto my grandchild William Sargent thirty shillings. Item I give & bequeath unto my daughter Elizabeth the wife of Sam Colby five pounds. Item I give all the remainder of my estate (these my legacies and my funeral charges being first paid) unto my daughter Sarah both housing and lands, cattles, and other moveables whatsoever always provided that if she dies without children that these housings and lands to be equally divided unto my four children hereafter named, i.e., my sons Thomas and William and my daughters Mary and Elilzabeth. Item I do consitute ordain and appoint my son Thomas Sargent and my daughter Sarah Sargent Executors unto this my Will and Testament and does make my loving brother in law Thomas Bradbury and my esteemed friend Major Pike by overseers to take care that this, my will, may be performed according to the true intent and meaning thereof.
